MED-X Therapy in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona
Med-X technology lets our therapists precisely target, strengthen
and stabilize your lower back or neck for better rehabilitation results–guaranteed!
As a clinic focusing on back and neck pain, we searched for the most
effective, scientifically-proven, non-surgical treatments for both back
and neck pain. We’ve found two high-tech treatments that when combined
are exceedingly effective in reducing pain, stabilizing specific muscles,
and increasing strength and flexibility. One treatment, spinal decompression
therapy with the DRX9000, focuses on treating the disc injury
itself. The other treatment, Med-X, allows precise isolation of troubled
muscles and helps therapists exercise, strengthen and stabilize specific
muscles of the lower back or neck. Both treatments are patented and FDA-cleared
for the treatment of lower back and leg pain, and neck and arm pain. And
both treatments have stacks of research behind them published in leading
medical journals.
Med-X research shows that the majority
of patients with chronic spinal pain are significantly deconditioned.
Naturally, if you’re in pain, you’re careful about how you walk, stand,
sit, bend over and lie down. And if you’re in chronic pain, you’re very
careful. Over time, this leads to muscle weakness that can lead
to, or exacerbate, many conditions such as herniated discs, facet syndrome
and degenerative joint disease.
The Med-X machines have been clinically proven to be extremely effective
in the treatment of chronic back and neck pain. Until Med-X developed
their patented restraint system, there was no effective way to isolate
and strengthen the muscles of the spine.
While many physical therapy providers have “low back” or “neck”
exercise machines that claim to strengthen the back and neck muscles,
clinical research has proven that these machines actually strengthen the
hamstrings and gluteus muscles or the upper back and shoulder muscles
instead. A controlled study done by the University of Florida showed that
people who worked out on two different “low back machines” for
12 weeks actually gained no strength at all in their lumbar extensor muscles.
The Med-X machines we have at our clinic in Phoenix allow our
therapists to test both a patient’s existing muscle strength and conditioning,
and help him or her recondition their muscles–both in their lower spine
and/or their cervical spine. These are highly advanced tools not normally
found in most spinal rehabilitation settings.

Our
Med-X Lumbar Extension machine provides targeted resistance
over either a full range of isolated lumbar motion, or over a selected
limited range. Isometric testing occurs every 3 degrees within a patient’s
range of motion. During the testing phase, software plots a strength curve
that allows comparison of the patient’s strength and range of motion to
age and gender matched norms. Accuracy and reliability of testing is addressed
by the machine’s ability to factor out the torque of both torso mass and
stored energy. For precise diagnostic understanding, tissue compression
and joint elasticity can be assessed and factored out at each angle tested.

Our
Med-X Cervical Extension machine is an effective, proven
solution for patients who also suffer from neck pain and headaches. Because
cervical muscles must continually support the weight of the head, neck
pain and headaches are common complaints. These ailments often originate
as a result of muscular weakness or traumatic injury.
The Med-X Cervical Extension machine allows for highly reliable and specific
quantification of isometric cervical extension strength testing and dynamic
variable resistance therapy. Isometric testing can be performed every
3 degrees through the normal 126 degree range of motion. And validity
is achieved by effectively stabilizing the torso in order to isolate cervical
extension muscles. Counterbalancing of the mass of the head ensures accurate
torque assessment.
